A New Jersey man, found fatally shot behind an abandoned building
near downtown Thursday, likely is the same man who reported being
carjacked hours earlier, according to police.
Daniel Ross, 44, was lying next to a silver 2002 Buick Century rental
car in back of 351 Hernando when police found him just before noon.
Dispatchers had received a 911 emergency call just after 5 a.m.
from a man who said he had been carjacked. The caller said he believed
he was in the area of Danny Thomas and Linden, police spokesman Officer
LaTanya Able said. Police saturated the area throughout the morning.
After a search of more than six hours, they discovered the slain
man behind the building several blocks to the west.
It was unclear whether the victim used a cell phone or land line,
Able said, or whether he had been robbed.
Detectives late Thursday were trying to retrace Ross's movements
overnight, said homicide Maj. Mike Quinn.
Ross, who was visiting relatives, planned to return to New Jersey
on Sunday, police said.
